How I Wear a Twist Out Hairstyle for Six Days

When I decided to stop perming my hair, it took me a few years to learn how to embrace and style my natural hair. The twist out has been my go to for keeping my natural hair in great shape and looking good for almost a week.

Preparing the Twist Out

My hair routine used to take close about twenty minutes in the morning. Now, I have gotten it down to about ten minutes. Creating the twists on the first day took about 35 minutes to complete. This includes detangling and conditioning my freshly washed hair. If I have somewhere to go, I will sit under a dryer and dry my twists. If I plan to spend most of the day running errands, I wear the twists all day, allowing them to air-dry. Air-drying your twists helps the curl pattern to look more defined the first day you take them out.

Twist Out on Days 2 - 4

The first couple of days of wearing the twist out style, I re-twist my hair every night and sleep with a silk cap on my hair. Re-twisting the style helps the curl pattern last longer. I also add a little of the homemade conditioner I use to the ends of my twists for extra moisture and to help curl the tips around my finger.

Twist Out on Days 5 and Beyond

Day 5 and beyond, I choose not to retwist my hair. Instead, I allow the twist out to loosen and my hair gets a little bigger and fluffier. I usually pull my hair back and wear some kind of decorative headband. I still wear the silk cap at night to protect my hair and a little fluffing of the curls is all that is needed for the day.

What I Use to Add Moisture to My Hair

My hair texture is fine and the twist out style makes my hair look fuller that it really is. My hair texture also does not lend itself to wearing a lot of product. Many of the products on the market weigh my hair down and attracts dirt. So, for a few years, I have been making my own hair moisturizer using a few simple items:

  • 1/2 pound Unrefined Raw Shea Butter
  • 1 tsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup Aloe Vera Juice
  • 1 tsp Grapeseed Oil
  • 1 tsp Sweet Almond Oil
  • 1 tsp Avocado Oil
  • 5 drops Lavender Oil
  • 5 drops Orange Oil
  • 5 drops Patchouli Oil

I mix up a batch of moisturizer with a blender and store it in the fridge. Adding the essential oils makes the mixture smell amazing. Lavender, Orange and Patchouli are three essential oils that work amazingly well together. People always remark on how wonderful my hair smells. You can opt to leave the Aloe Vera juice out of your mixture so you do not have to store it in the fridge. If I use Aloe Vera juice, I store mine in a cool place to prevent spoiling.

Since I have been wearing the twist-out, I wash my hair weekly with a cleansing conditioner. I rarely use shampoo because it strips my hair of moisture. I have used Wen and I was not overly impressed with it. The product works well, but it is overpriced. Instead, I have found a cleansing conditioner called Hair One . It works just as well as Wen and cost a lot less.

If you take the time to re-twist your hair before bed, your twist-out can last for at least a week. I would love to know what you are doing to maintain your hair and what types of products you are using. Please share in the comments and I will do my best to answer any questions you have.

Here’s to healthy, beautiful hair!

  • DanielleJ - It looks really cute!ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - Thank you, Danielle! I appreciate it.ReplyCancel

  • Tonia Sanders - Very nice. I think my favorite look is #3 for sure. You need to do a photo shoot with that one. 3 changes, on location. =)ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - Ha! Thank you, Tonia. 3 was the best day for sure. Day 1, the curls are too tight. By the third day, it is just how I like it.ReplyCancel

  • Anne Parris - Love it! What is a protective style?ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - Anne, a protective style is a hairstyle that keeps the ends covered and not exposed to the weather. In the winter, my hair gets brittle and dry because of the air. So, I will be wearing a lot of updo hairstyles. I would love to braid my hair, but it is not in the budget at the moment.ReplyCancel

  • Nappy Head Chronicles - Looks great!

I’ve been struggling for what feels like forever with perfecting the twistout with very little success. I too have fine hair, so perhaps if I borrow your recipe, it will help.

    Wish me luck!ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - I struggled with the twistout for a while, too. I have found doing it on wet hair works better for me keeping the twists defined for the first couple of days. Damp hair does not work for me and I dry my hair with a t-shirt now. No more towels. When I twist again at night, I add just a little product to my hair and twist it back up.ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - Best of luck, too with using the recipe for your hair!ReplyCancel

  • Laila @OnlyLaila - I think the longest I got was a week. I would just retwist it at night. It’s a chore! Thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

    • Lucrecer - You are right about it being a chore. I am looking at my hair right now and seriously wondering if I want to bother retwising tonight. LOLReplyCancel
